Introduction:
Cleaning the oven is one of those household chores that often gets pushed to the bottom of the to-do list. But with the right technique, oven cleaning doesn’t have to be a dreaded task! Whether your oven is covered in grease, burnt-on food, or stubborn stains, there’s a quick and simple way to restore it to its sparkling best. This “Housewife’s Method” for effortless oven cleaning combines natural, easy-to-find ingredients and a bit of elbow grease, leaving your oven spotless and fresh without harsh chemicals or complicated steps.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup baking soda
1/4 cup water (or more, if needed)
1/4 cup white vinegar
10-15 drops of essential oil (optional for fragrance, lavender or lemon work great)
A clean spray bottle
A soft sponge or cloth
Rubber gloves (optional for protection)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Cleaning Paste:
In a small bowl, mix 1/2 cup of baking soda with 1/4 cup of water. Stir until it forms a thick, spreadable paste. If you need a slightly runnier paste, you can add a bit more water until you reach the desired consistency.
2. Apply the Paste to the Oven:
Wearing rubber gloves (optional), apply the paste generously to the inside of your oven. Focus on the areas that are most soiled—especially the walls, bottom, and oven door. Be sure to avoid the heating elements. Let the paste sit for at least 15 minutes, but for tough stains, leave it on for up to an hour.
3. Add Vinegar for a Foamy Reaction:
Fill a spray bottle with white vinegar. After the paste has had time to sit, spray the vinegar generously over the baking soda paste. You will notice a fizzy reaction between the baking soda and vinegar, which helps break down grease and grime. Let this fizz for 5-10 minutes.
4. Wipe Away the Grime:
Using a soft sponge or cloth, start scrubbing away the loosened grime. Use a circular motion to lift off stubborn spots. For any particularly tough areas, you can use a non-abrasive scrubbing pad. If the paste has dried, simply spray a little more vinegar to reactivate it before wiping.
5. Rinse and Final Wipe:
Once you’ve scrubbed away all the grime, use a damp cloth to wipe down the oven’s interior and remove any remaining paste. You may need to rinse your cloth a few times to ensure that no residue remains.
6. Clean the Oven Racks:
If your oven racks are also dirty, remove them and place them in the bathtub or sink. Fill with warm water and add a few tablespoons of baking soda. Let them soak for 30 minutes to an hour, then scrub them with a sponge to remove any remaining grease.
7. Dry the Oven:
Once the oven is clean and all residue has been wiped away, leave the oven door open to air-dry. You can also wipe it down with a dry cloth to give it a shiny finish.
