Getting a key stuck or broken inside a lock is one of the most frustrating situations. Whether it’s an old key, a damaged lock, or a momentary lapse in attention, a broken key can leave you locked out and uncertain of how to proceed. The good news is that you don’t necessarily have to disassemble the lock to remove the broken key. Here are five clever tricks to help you safely extract the key and get the lock working again.
1. Use Needle-Nose Pliers
One of the simplest tools you can use is a pair of needle-nose pliers. If there’s enough of the key protruding from the lock, you may be able to grab it gently with the pliers. Grasp the broken key piece and try pulling it out slowly. Avoid pulling too hard to prevent pushing the key further in. If the piece doesn’t budge, a bit of wiggling or twisting might help loosen it.
2. Try a Broken Key Extractor Tool
If pliers aren’t cutting it, you can purchase a key extractor tool specifically designed for situations like this. These tools have small hooks that can latch onto the broken key. Insert the tool into the keyhole, hook it under the broken key, and slowly pull it out. These are often used by locksmiths and are quite effective in removing key fragments from locks.
3. Use Super Glue (Cautiously)
This method may sound unconventional, but it can work in certain circumstances. If there’s enough of the key left exposed, you can apply a small amount of super glue to the broken piece. Then, carefully press a wooden stick, matchstick, or even a pin against the glue to hold the key. After allowing it to dry for a few minutes, gently pull the key out. Be cautious not to use too much glue, and ensure it doesn’t seep into the lock, as it may cause more damage.
