Adams Matchbook Snapper – A Prankster’s Classic Mechanism

Introduction:
This unique little gadget—part prank, part mechanical curiosity—was once a popular novelty item tucked inside matchbooks. Featuring a spring-loaded snap mechanism, it’s designed to startle the unsuspecting with a harmless snap! With “Adams” printed on the upper arm, this tiny trap-like device is a vintage throwback to the golden age of practical jokes.

Ingredients (Materials Needed):

One cardboard matchbook

Small steel or aluminum spring-loaded mechanism

Adhesive (industrial-strength glue)

Branding label or engraving (“Adams”)

Optional: small piece of foam or felt (for dampening snap)

Instructions:

Preparation: Open a standard cardboard matchbook and remove a few matches if necessary to make room.

Placement: Glue the curved, spring-loaded mechanism to the inside cardboard cover, ensuring the upper arm is free to pivot.

Tension Setup: Push the lower curved portion toward the match heads, tucking the upper arm over it so it snaps down when released.

Finishing Touch: Close the matchbook and hand it to a curious friend. When opened, the mechanism springs to life with a sharp flick!
