Ingredients:
For the casserole:
500g (1 lb) minced beef or lamb
1 large onion, finely chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 tbsp tomato paste
1 tsp paprika
1/2 tsp ground black pepper
Salt to taste
1 tbsp olive oil
4-5 medium potatoes, peeled and thinly sliced
100g shredded cheese (cheddar or mozzarella)
For the béchamel sauce:
2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp all-purpose flour
2 cups milk
A pinch of nutmeg
Salt and pepper to taste
Instructions:
Prepare the meat layer:
Heat olive oil in a pan over medium heat. Sauté the onion until translucent. Add garlic and cook for 1 minute. Add minced meat, breaking it up with a spoon, and cook until browned. Stir in tomato paste, paprika, salt, and pepper. Let it simmer for 5 minutes. Set aside.
Make the béchamel sauce:
In a saucepan, melt butter. Whisk in flour and cook for 1 minute to form a roux. Gradually add milk while whisking to prevent lumps. Cook until the sauce thickens. Season with salt, pepper, and a pinch of nutmeg.
