Introduction: Clogged drains and leaky pipes are some of the most common plumbing problems in homes. While it’s easy to call a plumber, there are many situations where you can fix the issue yourself without professional help. Whether you’re dealing with a slow-draining sink, a stubborn clog, or a leaky pipe, these simple DIY tricks can save you time and money. In this guide, we’ll share some effective solutions for fixing drains and pipes, ensuring your home stays functional and leak-free.
Ingredients:
Baking soda
White vinegar
Hot water
Dish soap
Plunger
Plumbing snake or drain auger
Rubber gloves
Towels or rags
Pipe wrench (for pipe repairs)
Epoxy putty (for leaks)
A bucket (to catch water during pipe repairs)
A plunger (optional)
Instructions:
Unclogging a Drain with Baking Soda and Vinegar:
First, pour a kettle of boiling water down the drain to loosen any grease or gunk.
Next, add ½ cup of baking soda into the drain, followed by ½ cup of white vinegar. Let the mixture fizz and work for about 10-15 minutes.
After the fizzing stops, flush the drain with more boiling water to clear away any remaining debris.
Using a Plunger for Stubborn Clogs:
For tougher clogs, a plunger can be your best tool. Make sure there’s enough water in the sink or tub to cover the plunger’s rubber part.
Position the plunger over the drain and create a strong seal. Push down firmly and pull up quickly, repeating the motion several times to loosen the blockage.
Once the clog is cleared, run hot water to ensure the drain is fully open.
