Introduction:
Clogged drains are one of the most common household problems that often leave us frustrated and searching for solutions. We’ve all had that moment when the water starts to pool around the sink or shower, and no matter how much we plunge or pour down store-bought chemicals, the clog just doesn’t seem to go away. While most people call a plumber at the first sign of trouble, there’s a simple and effective trick that many professionals use but don’t share. This trick can solve your drainage issues quickly and without costly repairs. Here’s how you can tackle clogged drains like a pro!
Ingredients (Items You’ll Need):
Baking soda (about 1/2 cup)
White vinegar (1/2 cup)
Boiling water (1-2 liters)
A towel or cloth (optional to cover the drain)
A plunger (optional, depending on severity)
Rubber gloves (for safety)
Instructions:
Step 1: Prepare the Drain
Clear any visible debris: Before starting the trick, check if there are any obvious clogs near the drain opening, such as hair or soap scum. Remove them by hand or with a pair of tweezers.
Ensure water isn’t standing: If there’s a significant amount of water sitting in the sink or tub, try to drain some of it to avoid making a mess.
Step 2: Add Baking Soda
Pour the baking soda directly into the drain. Make sure it is distributed evenly inside the drain. Baking soda acts as an abrasive agent that helps break up grease and other buildup inside pipes.
Step 3: Pour in Vinegar
Add the vinegar slowly on top of the baking soda. You’ll notice some fizzing and bubbling, which is the reaction between the two ingredients. This effervescent reaction is key, as it helps dislodge the clog and loosen the debris inside the pipes.
Step 4: Cover the Drain
If the clog is particularly stubborn, you may want to cover the drain with a towel or cloth to keep the fizzing mixture inside the drain as long as possible. This helps increase the pressure and effectiveness of the reaction.
Step 5: Let It Sit
Allow the baking soda and vinegar mixture to sit for about 15 to 30 minutes. During this time, the fizzing action will work its magic, breaking down grease, grime, and any other organic matter contributing to the blockage.
Step 6: Flush with Boiling Water
After waiting, carefully pour 1-2 liters of boiling water down the drain to flush out the loosened debris. The hot water helps to clear any remaining residue and ensures that everything moves freely down the drain.
