1 (5 to 6 pounds) pork shoulder (pork butt)
1 tablespoon salt
2 teaspoons black pepper
1 teaspoon paprika
1 teaspoon garlic powder
1 cup chicken broth
2 cups barbecue sauce
8 hamburger buns, split
Coleslaw for serving (optional)
Directions
1. Mix together the salt, pepper, paprika, and garlic powder in a small bowl. Rub this mixture all over the pork shoulder.
2. Place the pork in a slow cooker and pour the chicken broth around the meat.
3. Cook on low for 8 to 10 hours, or until the pork is very tender and shreds easily with a fork.
4. Remove the pork from the slow cooker and shred the meat using two forks, discarding any excess fat.
5. Return the shredded pork to the slow cooker and mix in the barbecue sauce. Heat on low for an additional 30 minutes to meld the flavors together.
6. Serve the pulled pork on hamburger buns with a spoonful of coleslaw if desired.
Variations & Tips
For those looking to spice things up, add a teaspoon of cayenne pepper or chipotle powder to the rub. If dealing with picky eaters, you might try serving the barbecue sauce on the side so everyone can add to their own taste. Another fun twist is to use sweet potato or pretzel buns for an extra special touch.
