Patty Melts: A Classic Comfort Food That Hits the Spot Every Time

Introduction:
Few dishes offer the same comforting satisfaction as a classic patty melt. Combining the best parts of a juicy burger and a grilled cheese sandwich, the patty melt is a perfect balance of savory beef, melted cheese, and toasty bread. It’s a simple, hearty meal that brings warmth and nostalgia, making it an all-time favorite comfort food. Whether you’re enjoying it for lunch or dinner, a patty melt is easy to prepare and delivers big flavors in every bite. If you’re looking for a quick and satisfying meal, this dish is guaranteed to hit the spot!

Ingredients:

1 lb ground beef (80% lean for juiciness)
4 slices rye bread (or your preferred bread type)
4 slices Swiss cheese (or American cheese, if preferred)
1 medium onion, thinly sliced
2 tablespoons butter (for toasting the bread)
1 tablespoon olive oil (for cooking the patty)
Salt and pepper to taste
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (optional, for added flavor)
1 tablespoon mayonnaise (optional, for spreading on the bread)
Instructions:

Prepare the Beef Patties: Start by forming the ground beef into four evenly sized patties. Season them generously with salt, pepper, and Worcestershire sauce (if using). The patties should be slightly larger than the slices of bread, as they will shrink while cooking.

Cook the Patties: Heat a skillet or griddle over medium-high heat and add olive oil. Once hot, add the beef patties and cook for about 3-4 minutes per side, or until they reach your preferred level of doneness (medium-rare to medium works best for a patty melt). Remove the patties from the skillet and set them aside to rest.

Sauté the Onions: In the same skillet, add the thinly sliced onions and cook them in the remaining oil and beef drippings. Stir occasionally and cook until the onions are caramelized, about 8-10 minutes. Remove from heat and set aside.
